It is being billed as the fifth and final series of Poldark.
But writer Debbie Horsfield has given fans a glimmer of hope that the much-loved 18th century drama – and star Aidan Turner – will return.
The series, which starts on BBC1 next month, is the first not adapted directly from Winston Graham’s books.
Horsfield has instead bridged the 10 years between novels seven and eight to keep our hunky hero in his 30s.
But with 12 books in total she says Ross Poldark and wife Demelza, played by Eleanor Tomlinson, could one day be reunited on the small screen.
“Never say never,” she said at a preview screening this week.
“We’ve had an amazing run but there are five books left and who knows what could happen in a few years.
"The BBC would need to say that they wanted more and we’d take it from there.”
Producer Karen Thrussell – who fell in love with the novels as a schoolgirl – has previously said it would be “ a real honour” to dramatise all of the stories.
But she added: “If we did a Poldark six – and a lot of us would like to – it wouldn’t be for a few years yet.”
In the meantime Horsfield is going to enjoy some breathing space despite missing the show “enormously”.
She said: “I’ve had my first non-working holiday in six years. I’m normally writing the next scripts by now but I’ve just spent 10 days in Borneo without work and it was bliss.”
She is however working on a new secret adaptation for the BBC. Exactly what that is, like Poldark’s future, remains under wraps for now.
