Boris Johnson announces new national lockdown

Due to the continuous rise in coronavirus cases, Boris Johnson announced that a new national lockdown for England is expected to last until mid-February. BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker, 43, spoke candidly about a “tough” few months ahead for many Britons.

It is expected the new lockdown in England – the third time a national shutdown has been introduced – will last for over a month.

The Prime Minister hopes the most vulnerable will have all been offered the first dose of a vaccine.

Taking to Twitter, Dan admitted having a “strange conflict” with the Tier 5 news as he hinted many people will have to forego their New Year’s resolutions.

In view of his 673,000 followers, the presenter said: “Strange conflict for so many: feeling that something had to be done but broken-hearted by another national lockdown.

“I imagine quite a few New Year’s resolutions will disappear tonight #DryJanuary.”

In an earlier tweet, Dan explained it will be a “tough few weeks” but urged people to stay safe during this difficult time.

“This is going to be tough few weeks/months after a tough year,” the BBC host penned.

“’I know you’ve had enough of government guidance… but we must do this together’ – The Prime Minister. Stay safe one and all #NationalLockdown.”

Fans flocked to comment on the post, as many people expressed their dismay.

One wrote: “Just stay at home! We are doing our best to deal with this… people have got to stop being selfish, having hidden parties, and be made to pay for breaking the rules! It’s not just coronavirus it’s mental health that’s destroying lives.”

Another typed: “It is going to be tough but the alternative is even worse. We ALL must play our part and help each other, either by words or actions. Wash hands, stay two metres apart, stay safe.”

While a third person added: “Stay safe Dan.”

Following Mr Johnson’s announcement, people across the UK must stay at home and only leave in exceptional circumstances.

All primary schools, secondary schools, and colleges will move to online learning.

In a televised address, Mr Johnson said: “With most of the country already under extreme measures, it is clear that we need to do more, together, to bring this new variant under control while our vaccines are rolled out.

“In England, we must therefore go into a national lockdown which is tough enough to contain this variant.

“That means the Government is once again instructing you to stay at home.”

The Prime Minister said the public would only be allowed to leave the house for certain exceptions including shopping for essentials and exercise.

Hospitals in England are 40 per cent busier than the first peak of the virus in April 2020, Mr Johnson warned as he imposed a new national lockdown.
