Noah Cyrus claims she is “mortified” that she used a racially offensive term to defend Harry Styles in his feud against Candace Owens, a black, conservative political pundit.
“i am mortified that i used a term without knowing the context and history, but i know now and i am horrified and truly sorry,” the 20-year-old wrote on Instagram Stories on Thursday. “i will never use it again.”
She continued, “thank you for educating me. i in no way meant to offend anyone. i am so so sorry.”
Miley Cyrus’ younger sister came under fire when she posted a photo of Styles, 26, wearing a Gucci ball gown in his Vogue cover — which Owens, 31, criticized — and wrote over it, “he wears this dress better than any of u nappy ass heauxz.”
People on Twitter pointed out that Cyrus’ use of the word “nappy” was “racist.”
“Nothing to see here, just @noahcyrus ‘defending’ @Harry_Styles against criticism by @RealCandaceO – by calling Candace a ‘nappy ass hoe,’ one user tweeted, sharing a screenshot of the Instagram Story. “There truly is no racist like a White Liberal racist.”
Owens retweeted that comment, and replied, “Any one of woke liberals care to explain to me how @noahcyrus calling me a ‘nappy ass hoe’ is not racist? I’m all ears. You guys love cancel culture. @MileyCyrus come get your sister!”
The “Blackout” author also alleged in a separate tweet that liberals are “OKAY with racism so long as it’s directed at someone they do not like,” adding, “I have not ever said anything RACIST to anyone, ever. I said Harry Styles did not look masculine in a dress. That is plainly obvious.”
After Cyrus backtracked on her remark, several people on Twitter said they did not accept her apology. Users said they did not believe the singer’s excuse that she didn’t know the history of the word or did “not mean to offend anybody.”
“She literally used it in a derogative way,” one person tweeted. “She used it IN CONTEXT. She used it with her CHEST. I’m so Tired of the apologies. Imagine being mortified of offending someone when you purposely posted it to offend them. Wack. Lame. No. #NoahCyrus”
Another wrote, “noah cyrus can take her apology with her to hell. you know what nappy means bc you used it in a derogatory context.”
