Between heading up 1017 ALYX 9SM and Givenchy‘s menswear division Matthew M Williams is a busy man, but he’s got time for compelling footwear collaborations as well — namely his latest effort with Nike, the Zoom MMW 4. First revealed at the Swoosh’s Future Sport Forum in February, the Zoom MMW 4 offers a futuristic, high-tech look that’s a fitting evolution from Williams’ past technical styles like the Free TR 3 SP.
Dressed in a bone white colorway with black accents, the Zoom MMW 4’s upper is constructed of multiple meshes and held together by fused seams. Signature detail is served up by a circular, chromed-out silver overlay on the medial midfoot, partially covering the printed black Swoosh. Larger black Swooshes appear on the lateral midfoot with thin black laces and black collar trim providing further contrast. Williams’ name is stamped on the throat’s lace keeper, and simple MMW embellishments are placed above the toebox and on the insole and heel. Although the materials are undeniably advanced, the top half also gives off a look reminiscent of conceptual Nike designs from the ’00s for a dash of retro futuristic flair.
Down below, midsoles are very similar in shape and build to Nike ISPA‘s popular Road Warrior, a $500 USD sneaker that first hit retailers in July. Though the Zoom MMW 4 uses the same mix of Nike Shox-inspired Pebax plates and Zoom Air units as its predecessor, the build is more trim and the Zoom Air units are related solely to the forefoot while the midfoot uses EVA foam. A thick layer of sharply-shaped foam also runs from heel to toe above this assemblage, and the plate itself replicates the chrome detailing of the upper’s aforementioned midfoot overlay. Rounding off the look is a Waffle Racer-like square traction pattern, working with the curved, elongated heel to serve up a style that almost looks like tank treads.
The Matthew M Williams x Nike Zoom MMW 4 will likely release at the tail end of 2020 or early in 2021, though this has yet to be confirmed by Nike. The MSRP is pending as well.
