Amy Duggar is the black sheep of the Duggar family. As one of the cousins of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children, she didn’t grow up with the same rules and restrictions as the rest of her cousins did. And today, she seems close to Jill Duggar after Jill stepped away from her famous family.
Now, we’re taking a look back at old clips from the Duggar TLC shows. And Amy once called out Jim Bob for his ultra-strict courtship rules. Here’s what she said.
The Duggars have strict rules regarding dating and courtship
The Duggars are devout independent Baptists, and they abide by seriously strict rules. Jim Bob and Michelle believe in courtships as opposed to regular dating, as courting is “dating with a purpose” — and that purpose is eventual marriage. For this reason, many of the Duggar kids don’t have multiple courtships. And they quickly marry after meeting the person they’re courting.
Not only are Duggar courtships brief, but they’re also strict. Jim Bob and Michelle require chaperones to attend every date to make sure no funny business occurs. “The chaperones then have clear guidelines for what is acceptable and what’s not,” Michelle said. “They’re the accountability. What that means is they’re allowed to say, ‘Hey, are you supposed to be doing that?’”
The two people courting aren’t allowed to kiss, touch, hold hands, or give frontal hugs prior to marriage, either.
Amy Duggar embarrassed Jim Bob Duggar over his family’s rules
While Jim Bob and Michelle’s 19 kids don’t seem to have too much of an issue with the strict rules they grew up with, such is not the case for Amy. Because she grew up without any siblings in a household with fewer rules, she found the courtship guidelines to be way over the top.
Reddit users found an old clip of Amy talking to Jim Bob about courtships.
“I would probably ditch my chaperone,” Amy tells the camera. Then, she turns to Jim Bob and states, “You don’t want me to be the chaperone. I will pretty much let them do whatever.”
Jim Bob then tells Amy that he won’t put her name in the jar to be pulled as a chaperone for his kids.
“You told me James had to sit between them on the couch,” Amy continued. “Come on now! I’m pretty sure you and Aunt Michelle were not like that when you were younger.” Amy then turned to the camera and added, “I’m pretty sure they kissed before they were married.”
Jim Bob attempted to laugh off Amy’s comments, but he ends up walking away from the conversation with no further words.
Amy seemed to call out her famous extended family in a recent Instagram post
It was clear back then that Amy took serious issue with how her aunt and uncle were treating her cousins. Today, she doesn’t appear close with the Duggars at all, though she does keep up with Jill. Jill and her husband, Derick Dillard, have taken serious steps away from her parents, siblings, and TLC, and they’re also taking on more modern practices. Amy and Jill have connected since.
Now, it looks like Amy subtly calls out the Duggars in other ways. She posted a rude text she received to Instagram on Oct. 17, and within the caption, she talked about women’s bodies aren’t “a factory” for procreation.
“A women’s body is not a factory!!” Amy captioned the post. “Yes, our bodies can do miraculous things! But I hate that phrase ‘pop out’ umm. No. It’s WORK. And our bodies go through a lot! … I am an only child, and I think I grew up just fine. So cheers to the mamas who decide to have one child!”
We doubt Amy will ever see eye to eye with Jim Bob and Michelle. And it’s clear she won’t implement the same courtship rules for her own children!
