PHILLIP Schofield revealed he STOLE the £25,000 technicolour dreamcoat on his last night as Joseph.

The This Morning presenter, 58, took over from Jason Donovan on the West End stage for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1991.

However, when his tour finally ended, Phillip decided to take something as a souvenir – the £25,000 coat.

Speaking on The One Show, he said: "I kept the coat! Well, I stole the coat. Then we reached a compromise.

"I finished at the last night of the Palladium,by which date I'd done the six weeks and then I'd came back and did a year or so. And then I looked at the coat as I was packing up and I went, 'where's it going to go? It doesn't fit anyone else'.

"So I put it in a black bin liner and put it in the boot of my car and I thought, if they shout, I'll bring it back. And they shouted very loudly, because it was worth £25,000 – at least it was then.

"And then we reached a compromise. They said, if you take this on tour with you and you take it on Blackpool beach and the castle in Edinburgh and we use the new pristine coat on stage, you can use that one for all the promotion. So I got to keep it."

He also said the last person to wear it was his co-presenter Holly Willoughby.

She became the subject of the interview later on when Phillip credited her for helping him come out as gay to the nation on This Morning in February this year.

He said: "She is such a wise person. She's got such a calm and sensitive aura to her. At home, everyone saying, it'll be okay, it'll be okay. At work, she was saying, it'll be fine, she was the only one who knew at that time at work.

"Then you have to figure out how you do something like that. That's the worst thing about it, if you've got to do something about this in public, it has to be public, I knew they'd be a massive amount of scrutiny.

"And I said to Holly, 'I'll do it on a Thursday morning and I'll go and you carry on with someone else'. We were in a bar in London secretly having this meeting.

"And she said, 'Are you joking? There's no chance you'd leave and I carry on. No, we do it on a Friday, we ask Eamonn and Ruth if we can nick ten minutes of their show, and we both leave together'."

Phillip was married with wife Stephanie Lowe for 27 years before he came out. They share two daughters together.

The One Show airs weekdays 7pm on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
