Earlier this week film designer Ron Cobb, who worked on Star Wars, Indiana Jones and many more, died at the age of 83. The American-Australian also famously designed the DeLorean time machine’s look in Back to the Future. And now the franchise’s creator, writer and producer Bob Gale has paid a touching tribute to Cobb, sharing fond memories of how he came up with one of the most famous cars in movie history.

Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Gale said: “He was just the most delightful guy. He was a joy to work with.

“Wonderful sense of humour, he took it very seriously.

“And he just loved the movie when he saw it and loved how the DeLorean turned out. Very, very proud.”

Gale first met Cobb when the designer was working on Conan the Barbarian and had been a fan of his cartoons in the Los Angeles Free Press.

The Back to the Future writer and producer said: “Ron just has this really interesting, earthy quality to his work that was unique and special.”

Fast forward to 1984 and Gale and director Robert Zemeckis were trying to work out what the time machine version of the DeLorean car was going to look like.

The early ideas they’d seen were too slick, with the two Bobs feeling the car had to really look like Doc Brown had built it in his garage.

So they decided to get Cobb’s perspective on it, who was available for only a couple of weeks.

Gale remembered: “Ron came up with these blue prints, where he really thought, ‘Okay this is a nuclear reactor built into a car.’”

The Back to the Future legend shared how Cobb came up with the core of the reactor and a cooling vent that eventually evolved into two.

He also designed the cockpit, which at one point had much more equipment in it.

The writer/producer added: “Bob Z and I were just blown away, he gets it, this is right!”
