Former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates accused President Trump of “fawning” over Russian leader Vladimir Putin and trampling on democracy at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday evening.
“He treats our country like his family business, this time bankrupting our nation’s moral authority at home and abroad,” the Obama holdover said.
Trump fired Yates just 10 days after moving into the executive mansion after the Obama-appointee refused to defend in court his Muslim travel ban.
She addressed her dismissal early in her speech, calling the policy “shameful and unlawful.”
Yates was one of the first speakers at Tuesday’s virtual convention during a segment themed “We Respect the Constitution.”
The party’s decision to feature Yates so prominently was a blatantly partisan one given the immense scrutiny Yates is facing from Republicans over her involvement in the investigation into President Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Flynn.
Her firing made her a hero in liberal Democratic circles and many in the party have speculated she may have a future in office.
In a Senate hearing earlier this month, the Democrat operative threw then-FBI director James Comey under the bus and claimed he went “rogue” during the Flynn investigation.
Yates first learned of Flynn’s phone calls with then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak directly from President Obama at a January 2017 meeting in the Oval Office also attended by Joe Biden, but denied they were trying to influence the case.
