Strictly Come Dancing favourite Debbie McGee, 61, has revealed she became too “relaxed” about food during the coronavirus lockdown, which caused her to gain some weight. Speaking about the difficult situation on her Spill the Tea with Debbie McGee podcast, Paul Daniels’ widow explained how having more time to spend at home affected her health.

She said: “We’re still in this strange, strange situation of not quite lockdown, we can go out, but do we feel safe going out?

“And also, I’m like everybody else, well not everyone, but lots of my friends, we’ve all put on a bit of weight in the lockdown, which I was finding really hard actually to lose.

“Sometimes it’s harder to lose a few pounds than to lose a few stone,” Debbie admitted.

Fortunately, Debbie was able to get some advice from an expert on the subject of food by speaking to her friend Giancarlo Caldesi.

She explained: “And then my lovely friend, the chef Giancarlo Caldesi, I was having a chat with him last week and I said, ‘Right, Giancarlo, I’m going to have to, for probably the first time in my life, actually go on some sort of diet.’

“And he said, ‘But darling remember, just cut down your portions.’

“And of course that is what it is and I’ve found that in lockdown, because you’re more relaxed and I’m not rushing off somewhere, I’m not gobbling my food down like I normally am and then rushing off, I’m sitting, relaxing, eating and then you can eat more.”

The former magician’s assistant then asked her listeners if they could sympathise with her experience.

Debbie said: “So, if anybody is like me out there and you’re struggling with a bit of weight, yes, up the exercise, go for more walks, or like I’m doing getting out on my bike a bit more.

“But also cut down a bit, mine is – instead of having six chocolate biscuits, I’m just having two and that’s hard as well, I really fancy more, I want more!”

Elsewhere, Debbie addressed news that her role in a pantomime production of Cinderella has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The star opened up about the “really sad” situation in view of her 42,000 Twitter followers last week while retweeting a post from the theatre’s Chief Executive.

It read: “With no sign of when we can reopen it was inevitable that Cinderella @mayflower would be moved to next year.

Sharing her thoughts, the former Strictly contestant wrote: “It really is so sad, it was going to be wonderful but it has to be in these unsure times.”

In spite of the unfortunate predicament, Debbie saw the positive side and insisted “Cinderella will get to the ball”, just slightly later than planned.

She added: “But Cinderella will get to the ball just a little later in fact a whole year later but she will meet her Prince. Until then I will be saving my Fairy dust.”

Debbie is set to star as The Fairy Godmother in the production alongside Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood, who will be playing The Wicked Stepmother.

Theatres have been closed since March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
