For the past decade, Toyah Battersby’s (Georgia Taylor) yearning to be a mum has been heartbreaking to watch – unable to conceive, she was then robbed of the opportunity when her surrogacy plans with Eva fell apart in Coronation Street. And now, just as her fostering journey with Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo) reaches a pivotal point after months of preparing, she has been forced to ditch her dream once more.
Toyah and Imran were excited to be considered for a meeting with a social worker to consider them as foster parents but then the devastating news came that Leanne’s (Jane Danson) son Oliver is terminally ill.
As Leanne fell apart, Toyah tried to broach the topic with her sister but after some devastating words from her sister, Toyah conceded that it isn’t the right time.
Georgia exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’ve to assume that Toyah and Imran have been looking into this for some time, so it’s not like it’s just come from nowhere for Toyah. And then just as they have this opportunity, the worst thing possible happens to the family.
‘Toyah is the one that Leanne lashes out to the most – because she knows she will likely forgive her as they love each other. What Leanne says is not from spite, it’s grief and so Toyah has to step away. But it really impacts on what she and Imran had planned – Toyah knows Leanne has to be her focus.’
Toyah organises for Leanne to meet with Josie, someone who runs a support group for parents with terminally ill children – and this does provide some comfort for Leanne.
After Josie leaves, Leanne declares that listening to her has made her realise that they need to make Oliver’s life the best it can be for as long as possible and that she intends to take Oliver to Cornwall after all, as a holiday will do him good and his happiness is her top priority.

Imran tentatively broaches the subject of fostering with Nick (Ben Price) and explains how they’ve put their plans on hold so as not to upset Leanne. With Nick’s encouragement, Toyah reveals her fostering plans to Leanne. Leanne admits the timing isn’t great but assures her she has her blessing.
But as the situation goes on, will Leanne always feel this way? And will the highly emotive situation go against Toyah and Imran as they apply to foster, given the tense environment a child could be placed in?
