Lampshades, clothes, face creams, spectacles, Christmas crackers, chocolate and shoes… all the things DPD WON’T deliver if you pack a parcel yourself

  • DPD Local has a list of prohibited items such as ammunition and human remains
  • Other products may come as a shock to consumers such as Christmas crackers
  • Less surprising banned deliveries include drugs, flammable goods and knives

Lampshades, clothes and Christmas crackers are just some of the items DPD will not deliver if you pack the parcel yourself.

The packaging giant has a list of prohibited items on its website, some of which will not come as a surprise, such as ammunition, human remains and fireworks.

But other products may come as a shock to consumers such as Christmas crackers, chocolate and shoes.

Other items that can’t be delivered include art, cameras, documents, lampshades and posters.

Christmas crackers are one of the many items that cannot get delivered by DPD Local

Glasses are another item that is on a lengthy prohibited list on the DPD Local website

Less surprising banned deliveries include hazardous goods, drugs, flammable goods, knives and infectious substances.

The lengthy list appears on the DPD Local website. DPD Local is a part of the wider DPD group, but focuses on smaller packaging sent by consumers.

The main DPD company, which is differentiated from DPD Local by having a red rather than blue logo, is primarily focused on large retailers and specialists.

The packaging and delivery is all agreed in advance with the relevant business and is contracted.

But for DPD Local a lot of the deliveries are sent by people and the company have no control over the packaging used, so list a number of prohibited items.

DPD Local flags up goods that are noncompliant as soon as they are specified on their order forms.

You are not allowed to courier a lampshade with DPD Local, which has a list of banned products. Other couriers have similar lists

But other products may come as a shock to consumers such as Christmas crackers, chocolate, shoes and face cream

Other competitors such as Hermes, also have a similar prohibited list available on their website.

Yodel, for instance, refuses to deliver fur-trimmed clothes, and TNT bans posters and chocolate, much like DPD Local.

None of the main companies will let people send liquids or gels.

Having the large lists helps keep costs down and also means couriers can exempt items that a likely to break easily or not get to their destination safely.

A spokesman for DPD has been approached for comment.
