James was originally cast to be a contestant for Clare Crawley’s season. Fans were excited about this because he is good friends with Tyler Cameron, who was on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette.

He is the first Black lead of The Bachelor. This announcement comes after multiple former stars called out the franchise for its lack of diversity.

“In 40 seasons of [The Bachelor], you’ve had one black lead,” Rachel Lindsay, who starred in The Bachelorette Season 13 said on AfterBuzz. “We are on 45 presidents. And in 45 presidents there’s been one Black president. You are almost on par to say you’re more likely to become the president of the United States than you are a Black lead in this franchise. That’s insane. That’s ridiculous.”

He hopes there will be a diverse cast

James went on Good Morning America to talk about getting the role. “It’s an honor,” he said. “I’m just going to lean into myself and how my mom raised me and hopefully when people invite me into their homes on Monday night they’re going to see that I’m not much different from them and they see that diverse love stories are beautiful.”

He was asked what he’s looking for in a woman. “Fortunate for me I’m looking for qualities that … my mom embodies,” he answered. “Selfless, honest, caring, compassionate, and those are qualities found in women all shapes, sizes, and races. And it’s not a black or white thing. So I’m hoping that when that limo pulls up there’s a lot of diversity and I see every type of woman coming out of that limo.”

The franchise was recently criticized for casting

It’s probably a good thing that producers will have more time to create a cast for James’ season. Casting of Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette was recently criticized.

That’s because Crawley is 38 years old and yet most of her contestants were around the age of 29. She claimed that she didn’t mind dating younger men. But she put a call out for more contestants in her response to her season being delayed.

“Talk about most dramatic season ever!” read her statement on Instagram. “In all seriousness, everyone’s health is the most important priority at this time, and as I’m sure you’ve heard, we are pressing pause for now on filming The Bachelorette. We are taking it day by day and even hour by hour as this is so unpredictable. All I know for sure is that my heart is so full from all the love and support this far, and am still so excited for my journey to begin! I’ve waited 38 years for these moments, what’s a little bit longer, right!”

James’ season of The Bachelor isn’t expected to air until 2021. Production of Crawley’s season is still on hold.
