As with other faiths, Muslims must observe specific rituals as part of their daily prayers. As the end of the holy month of Ramadan ends, Muslims will celebrate the beginning of Eid al-Fitr with prayers and feasting. Express.co.uk gives you prayer times in the UAE.

Normally Eid al-Fitr would be celebrated at mosques, but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Muslims have been urged to observe the festival at home.

Praying, also known as Salah or Salat, is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Salat is performed five times each day at specific times.

The timetable sets the pattern of the day for a Muslim and prescribed prayer times vary throughout the year.

Eid al-Fitr prayer times in Dubai, UAE

According to Khaleej Times, the Eid prayer is made of two rak’ahs (bows) but starts with seven Takbeers (saying Allah Akbar) in the first Rak’ah and six in the second.

After Takbeers, the individual worshipper or Imam must loudly read Surat Al Fatiha, the first chapter in the holy Quran, and full or part of verses from another Sura.

This year’s Eid al-Fitr prayer will be performed at home to ensure safety, as mosques across the country will remain closed due to the precautionary measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The timings are subject to change as per the directives of the authorities concerned.

The UAE has set up a moon sighting committee to sight the Shawwal crescent, which must be spotted to start Eid.

The committee, chaired by justice minister Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi Al Dhaheri, will hold a virtual meeting after Maghrib prayers on Friday, May 22.

If the crescent is sighted Saturday, May 23, will be the first day of the month of Shawwal, marking the end of Ramadan.

The first prayer of the day, the Fajr, starts at dawn, which is at 4.02am in Dubai on May 23.

On Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25, the Fajr prayer should take place at 4.01am, while Tuesday, May 26 to Wednesday, May 27 will see dawn at exactly 4am.

What are the five times of prayer?

  • Fajr – Dawn prayer

Fajr starts off the day with the remembrance of God and is performed before sunrise.

  • Dhuhr – Midday prayer

Dhuhr breaks shortly after noon to again remember God and seek his guidance.

  • Asr – Afternoon prayer

In the late afternoon, Muslims remember God through the Asr prayer and reflect on the greater meaning of their lives.

  • Maghrib – Sunset prayer

Just after sunset goes down, Muslims remember God again with the Maghrib prayer as the day begins to come to a close.

  • Isha – Evening prayer

Before bed, Muslims again take the time to remember God’s presence, guidance, mercy, and forgiveness.
