A ‘ridiculous’ sign has popped up in one Cambridgeshire village in a bid to stop cyclists ‘panting’ coronavirus through the area.
With lockdown in full effect – and exercise at a premium – the small village of Coveney, to the west of Ely, has seen more and more people taking to their bikes.
One resident, however, has not taken kindly to the emergence of cyclists, erecting a sign asking them to ‘stop panting viruses through our village’.
They also ask the cyclists to ‘stay away’ and ‘keep in your own area’.

The sign has attracted consternation from a number of people on the village’s Facebook page, with one branding it ‘the most ridiculous sign I have ever seen’.
They continued: ‘I think there is plenty of space for all to maintain social distancing and enjoy the fresh air these beautiful villages have to offer.’
The chairman of Coveney Parish Council, Barry Matthews, yesterday said that the sign has been set up on a highway without the necessary permission and will be removed in due course.
Cllr Matthews said no one had come forward to take ownership for the sign or discuss their concerns with the council.

He added: ‘Could whomever produced the sign connect with the parish council? We would love to understand the concerns.
‘There has been no permission for this sign to be placed in its current location. It will be removed in due course, please remove it and save someone having to go out and remove it.
‘If you want to display a sign please use your own property or engage with the relevant authorities.’
He stressed that the sign did not represent the views of the parish council.
