What’s this? Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) with a conscience in EastEnders? After returning from being in hiding in the wake of the boat crash, Phil has seen first hand how awful Sharon (Letitia Dean) is feeling after Dennis’ death, he makes a life changing decision.
Following a public showdown at Dennis’ wake, which sees Sharon lunge at Phil with a knife and blame him for Dennis’ death, the hard man decides he needs to do the right thing and accept responsibility for what has happened.
While it has yet to come to light that Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) locked Dennis in a cabin below and he likely would have lived if that hadn’t have happened, Phil knows he played a big part in the disaster as his attack on Keanu caused the boat to veer and crash.
Feeling raw over Sharon’s hatred towards him and also his own grief over Dennis, a boy he saw as his own son, Phil hands himself into the police – heralding the short term return of his lawyer Ritchie Scott (Sian Webber).
Ritchie has helped many a Walford resident, particularly Phil, out of a legally awkward situation but this one might be a stretch even for her.
This time, Ritchie rushes back to help Phil as he is handing himself in for causing the boat accident that claimed the life of Dennis.
However by admitting he was responsible, he could lead to the police to make assumptions that he attempted to kill Keanu at Christmas. Can Ritchie stop Phil from going down for years?

It may not just be the boat crash that he is facing jail for as his situation takes a turn for the worse.
EastEnders airs these scenes on Monday 6 April at 8pm on BBC One.
