Love, Rosie (2014)

This stupidly adorable rom-com follows Rosie and Alex (Lilly Collins and Sam Claflin), two best friends who try to sort out their feelings for each other as adults. Their friendship, which started as 5-year-olds, is tested by distance, significant others who come and go, and pretty much everything else you could possibly think of.

The Spectacular Now (2013)

Sutter (Miles Teller) is a high school kid with a lot of problems. He drinks too much, he doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life, and he basically hates everything to do with school. Then he meets Amy (Shailene Woodley), and things start to change—before getting even more complicated.

Moonlight (2016)

If you haven’t seen the movie that caused the craziest Academy Awards moment of all time, you’re missing out. The movie traces the life of Chiron Harris, an African-American man in Florida who’s grappling with his sexuality and identity.

Wine Country (2019)

This movie is straight-up silly, and the cast is a who’s who of comedians: Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer, Tina Fey, and Maya Erskine, to name a few. It’s about a group of women who head to wine country for a girls’ weekend, and disaster ensues. Sound familiar?

20th Century Women (2016)

A single mom (Annette Bening) asks two young women (Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig) to help her teach her teenage son how to be a good guy before it’s too late. This experiment goes somewhat terribly, but it’s definitely fun to watch.

The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)

Okay, picture this: Jude Law plays a rich kid who’s skipping out on his family duties to hang out in Italy with Gwyneth Paltrow, his girlfriend. Matt Damon is tasked with bringing him home but only because Matt Damon is pretending to be someone he’s not. Then, there’s murder. It’s insane and so good.

Frances Ha (2013)

This movie is not only a great coming-of-age film but it also features some great performances by people you like now, but way before they were Big Famous. Adam Driver, anyone? It’s about Frances, a girl in New York City who’s just trying to figure out how to adult. To say it’s relatable is an understatement.

The King (2019)

Missing Game of Thrones? This is the movie for you! It’s basically like a long episode of the show without the dragons, featuring Timothée Chalamet as the titular king. Plus, you’ll learn a little bit of history while you’re at it. Win-win!

Hairspray (2007)

Zac Efron SINGING. Need I say more? This movie is literally stacked with good people, and it’s an absolute pleasure to watch. If you haven’t seen it in a few years, now is the time to bring it back.

Marriage Story (2019)

Marriage Story is the thing you watch when you’re in need of a good cry. It might make you want to break up with your significant other because you’re afraid to ever marry anyone, but that’s cinema, baby!

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)

If you like true crime in any capacity, you will probably enjoy—and also be disturbed by—Zac Efron playing Ted Bundy. He’s so convincing, it’s actually crazy, and it’ll make you wonder whether you would haven fallen for Bundy’s antics.

Sleeping With Other People (2015)

This rom-com pretty much perfectly describes what it’s like to date in a time when a friends-with-benefits situation is the expectation, not the exception. Lainey and Jake (Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis) are both trying to date and be friends with each other while having some serious sexual tension, and it makes for a very fun few hours.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

When high schooler Nadine’s (Hailee Steinfeld) best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) starts hanging out and dating her older brother, she’s rightfully pissed, but the story of how they get through it will make you remember how rough it was to be 17, in a good way.

Someone Great (2019)

This is the movie that introduced the country at large to the music of Lizzo, and for that, we owe it so much. This is a love story that takes place after a breakup, which is a refreshing twist on the typical rom-com formula.

Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Ali Wong and Randall Park play childhood best friends who reconnect as adults and—shocker—figure out they kinda have feelings for each other. Things are obviously made complicated, but the Keanu Reaves cameo is what makes this movie truly great.
