We know that Prince Charles and Princess Diana didn’t have a fairy tale marriage, but while many people thought their issues developed over the years it seems they had their set of problems early on, very early on.
Their marital bliss may have ended before it even started because of what occurred on their honeymoon. It’s been reported that at one point during the trip that was supposed to be so romantic, the Princess of Wales cried her eyes out and another time went into a fit of rage. Here’s what happened on Charles and Diana‘s honeymoon.
The reason Princess Diana cried her eyes out
The royal couple started their getaway with a 14-day cruise of the Mediterranean before heading to Balmoral Castle in Scotland. It was at that estate where Charles planned to read and do some other leisurely activities.
“For him, this was ‘a blissful interlude at his favorite home, complete with his books, his fishing rods, and his friends’ while his new bride was for some reason ‘unable to surrender herself to his good humor,’” royal writer Anthony Holden revealed in Charles: A Biography.
During this time it was reported that the princess was having mood swings and bawling her eyes out but her husband did not offer comfort.
Another royal author, Penny Junor, also wrote about Diana being upset that Charles was more interested in reading than her.
In The Duchess: The Untold Story, Junor explained that “Diana was no great reader and was offended that he should prefer to bury his head in a book rather than sit and talk to her. She hated his wretched books.”
Diana went into a fit of rage as well
Junor claimed that the pair actually began fighting on the cruise before they even got to Scotland.
She noted that “One day, when [Charles] was sitting painting on the veranda deck, he went off to look at something for half an hour. He came back to find [Diana] had destroyed the whole lot.”
Junor continued, “She resented him sitting for hours at his easel … and they had many blazing rows.”
Junor agreed with Holden that the princess’ unhappiness continued at Balmoral, writing, “[Diana] hated the countryside, hated his family’s passion for horses and dogs, hated the rain that poured down remorselessly; and she felt that her husband was avoiding intimate contact.”
Eleven years after saying “I do,” Charles and Diana agreed to separate. During the Princess of Wales’ explosive Panorama interview in 1995, she spoke about their marital struggles, being unhappy, and the prince’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. After the interview aired, Queen Elizabeth II urged them to get a divorce. They did so in 1996, one year before Diana’s tragic death.
