When it came to jobs, women edged out men in December.

Women had 50.04% of non-farm jobs at the end of 2019, 109,000 more than their male peers, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.   

That was just one of the insights in the latest jobs report that showed the U.S. gaining 145,000 jobs in December and maintaining a 3.5% unemployment rate–a five-decade low.

Women’s greater share of jobs may have been partly fueled by the growth in industries that they tend to dominate versus men. For instance, retail showed the biggest increase in jobs, adding 41,200 positions, while the manufacturing sector lost 12,000 jobs. Health care also showed major gains, gaining 28,1000 jobs.
