As a child, Meghan Markle would eat the same meal on Jan. 1 to celebrate the start of a new year. Continue reading to learn what three dishes were prepared in Markle’s household to mark the occasion.
The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex has long proclaimed her love of food. She used to share tips and tricks via her now-defunct lifestyle blog, The Tig, which she shuttered after three years in 2017 to prepare for royal life. However, we’re still learning from Markle who has been known to cook meals for her husband, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and their young son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
Meghan Markle helped publish a charity cookbook
Part of being a member of the royal family is becoming a patron of charities. Markle chose the Hubb Community Kitchen as her first solo charitable project, which is made up of women affected by the 2017 Grenfell Tower Fire in London, England.
Together, Markle and the organization released a book of recipes to raise money for the kitchen called, Together: Our Community Cookbook. In addition to visiting the charity to prepare meals, she penned a foreword for the cookbook, according to Business Insider.
New Year’s Day meal one of Markle’s favorites
Released on Sept. 25, 2018, the cookbook featured a two-page message from the Duchess of Sussex about “the power of a meal.” In her writings, Markle highlighted one of her favorite meals she had as a child growing up in California.
“One of my own favorite meals is collard greens, black-eyed peas, and cornbread — a meal I would look forward to throughout my childhood,” she wrote.
She continued, sharing the meaning behind the traditional meal she could count on eating Jan. 1.
“This was always eaten on New Year’s Day, a tradition steeped in ancestral history in which each component has a meaning: the black-eyed peas for prosperity, the greens for wealth, the cornbread for health and nourishment,” she said. “It wasn’t a New Year’s resolution; it was a wish. It wasn’t simply a meal; it was a story.”
Markle first visited the Hubb Community Kitchen in January 2018, according to GMA. The organization holds a special place in the Duchess of Sussex’s heart who has made numerous visits to the kitchen since and even honored the charity by hosting a luncheon in their honor.
The praise continued as recently as Dec. 2019. In an Instagram post to Markle and Prince Harry’s joint Instagram account, @SussexRoyal, the Duchess of Sussex chose to put a “spotlight” on the Hubb Community Kitchen.
The post published on Dec. 5, 2019, highlighted the success of the cookbook and what appeared to be a personal note from Markle. “Thank you, ladies, for the leadership and inspiration that your cooking and love of community brings to all those around you,” she wrote. “We remain so very proud of the good work that you continue to do, and cannot wait to see what 2020 brings!”
The question now remains whether or not Markle continued the tradition on Jan. 1, 2020, by preparing the meal she had as a young girl for Archie.
