ARSENAL fans have congratulated Bernd Leno on his club player of the month award – having had to clean up after his side’s terrible defence.

The German leads the entire Premier League for saves made this season, keeping the opposition at bay 66 times while conceding 23.

It is something of a measure of the Gunners right now that their top performer in November was a defensive player who failed to keep a clean sheet.

Leno performed well in the month-opening 1-1 draw with Wolves that saw Arsenal hold out for 78 minutes before letting the visitors take a point from the Emirates – allowing 24 shots along the way.

The following defeat at Leicester contained a similar sense of siege mentality before the North London side saw out November with a 2-2 draw against Southampton.

It is fair to say that throughout the month, when including the two disappointing Europa League results in as well, no one player stood out.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette scored two apiece as Unai Emery racked up three draws and two defeats before getting sacked.

And fans appreciated how Leno largely kept his nose clean in a disparate spell for the Gunners.
