The caller, named Frederick from Bedfordshire wanted Jeremy to shed some light for him.

Those watching at home heard him say: “Let me ask you two questions, if Andrew is innocent like he says, why hasn’t Ms Maxwell come forward to boost his story?

“And another thing, if Prince Andrew went to America, would he be arrested by the FBI?”

Dodging the first question entirely, Jeremy replied: “Yes, to the second question probably. I don’t know.”

One of today’s panellists interjected and the camera panned to the desk.

She said: “Not arrested, he would be interviewed.”

But Jeremy didn’t agree with her point of view and hit back: “Well he might be.

“But they might put him in a bit of a lock down and that could be diplomatically – can you imagine!”

Another of his guests, Alistair Campbell joked: “Ghislaine’s out campaigning with Jacob Rees Mogg – two invisibles together!”

After laughing, Jeremy said: “I did tweet yesterday, I didn’t want to say this in a too blatant way, [but] given what we know about Andrew’s finances, if it was any ordinary citizen, HMRC, the tax authorities would say ‘could we just have a look please.’”

It comes as the member of the royal family sat down with BBC presenter Emily Maitlis in a Newsnight special about his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the sexual assault allegations against him.

The Duke of York strongly denies any sexual contact with an American woman named Virginia Roberts, who claims she was forced to have sex with him aged 17.

Ms Roberts said she met the Prince on March 10, 2001 at a London nightclub called Tramps.

However, the Duke disputes this, claiming he was at home and had taken his daughter, Princess Beatrice, to a Pizza Express in Woking for a party.

Following this, Prince Andrew has stepped back from royal duties “for the foreseeable future”.

However, his alleged victim Virginia Roberts has given an interview on the allegations as the prince “categorically” denies having any sexual contact with her.

She spoke to BBC Panorama before Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview.

In a clip released ahead of tonight’s Panorama, Ms Roberts-Giuffre said: “It was a really scary time in my life.

“He knows what happened, I know what happened. And there’s only one of us telling the truth.”

Ms Roberts claimed she was ordered to have sex with Prince Andrew three times between 2001 – when she was 17 – and 2002, in London, New York and Epstein’s private island in the US Virgin Islands.

Jeremy Vine airs weekday mornings at between 9 and 9.30am on Channel 5.
