THE Crown's Tobias Menzies – who plays Prince Philip – said his mum would be "ashamed and disown him" for his role on the Netflix drama.

The actor says his mum was a staunch anti-royalist, so would not agree with him playing a part in the series about the royal family.

"She would actively never put on the Queen's speech, so, as a result, prior to doing The Crown, they weren't on my radar," he told The Sunday Times Magazine.

The star claims he doesn't feel conflicted about acting on a show about the royal family when he does not believe in it, but adds: "My mother would be ashamed of me."

He also says his teacher mother would "disown" him now that he feels compassion for the royals after taking on the role.

Tobias said he disagrees with the show's portrayal of Prince Philip.

He claims the series portrays him as a "tyrannical" father to Prince Charles, played by Josh O'Connor, while being kind to Princess Anne.

He told Harper's Bazaar UK: "Philip really isn't on record talking about it. In the show, we suggest he was a distant father, sometimes even a tyrannical father.

"I want to defend Philip in this regard. There's a real contradiction in the end [because] there are also examples that Philip was a pretty hands-on dad, that he was pretty present, and parented with a lot of humour.

"You see Charles and Philip laughing. So I can't really tell where the truth lies."
