A British student is now housebound and blind after being hit by a freak wave on holiday in Malta.

Miyako Aiko-Murray, from London, went swimming while still wearing her contact lenses last summer.

The 20-year-old said a huge wave hit and water went into her right eye. It later became very irritated and red.

After she returned home she went to a friend's wedding and noticed her eye was 'constantly watering', she also became sensitive to light and had painful migranes.

The former accountancy student said: "Within three days of starting my new job, I felt a sharp pain which I can describe as a piece of metal in my eye."

After being seen by several doctors and specialists she was told she had Ancanthamoeba keratitis (AK)- a rare infection that damages the front of the eye.

It happens when bacteria infects the transparent outer covering of the eye called the cornea and is most common in people who wear contact lenses.

Miyako was forced to take two weeks sick leave, and eye drops every hour.

She said: "This was devastating and overwhelming for me. I still went work on time with little to no sleep whilst attending my hospital appointments every Wednesday which was a hour a journey there back.

"I tried my best and worked so hard whilst balancing studying, even leaving my house was scary because I have severe photo-phobia and anxiety.

"In December just before Christmas I lost my job due to this condition, I was heartbroken as I felt as everything was getting worse but my family kept me going."
