Netflix today (Thursday, August 15) will release Mindhunter season two, which will see Holden Ford (played by Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) back in Quantico. Mindhunter season two was filmed on location in the spring of 2018. The Atlanta child murders of 1979 to 1981 are the backdrop to Mindhunter season two on Netflix, meaning there might be a series of new locations on the series.

Where is Mindhunter season 2 set?

Ford and Tench are based out of the Behavioral Science Unit of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

The real town is a base for many police and military operations, including not only the FBI Academy but also the Drug Enforcement Agency’s training academy and the real-life Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Quantico is also where the beginning of Silence of the Lambs, which Mindhunter has often been compared to, is set.

Netflix has revealed which serial killers Ford and Tench will be seeking the help of this seasons, so we know some of the settings we will visit.

These include the Son of Sam killer David Berkowitz (Oliver Cooper), who was incarcerated in New York’s Attica prison and Charles Manson (Damon Herriman), who was housed in the San Quentin in California.

The main case that the duo are investigating in Mindhunter season two are the Atlanta Child Murders, meaning viewers will also likely be spending time in the Georgia state.

This will surely involve them profiling the man who was charged with two of the nearly 20-plus murders, Wayne Williams.

He is in the Telfair State Prison in Georgia, so Ford and Tench are also likely to make a visit there.

Where is Mindhunter season 2 filmed?

Although Holt and Tench have to journey across the US to talk to serial killers, the show is mostly filmed in and around one American city.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania provides most of the filming locations for Mindhunter season two.

Locations like the FBI Academy and Holden’s apartment were built as sets in Pittsburgh’s 31st Street Studios.

A number of Pennsylvanian locations used in the first series which are expected to return in the second.

These include the Washington and Jefferson College, The George Washington Hotel, the Oaks Theatre, Carnegie Mellon University and the former State Correctional Institution in Greenburg.

Mindhunter producer David Fincher told the Post Gazette about the locations: “We went looking for a place that could give us a lot of different looks: flat lands, farms, downtowns, urban areas under bridges and we all converged on Pittsburgh

“When we went to McKeesport, an entire street looks like it’s 1978. It was a stroke of good fortune.”

The shoot saw Holden Ford actor Jonathan Groff in his native state, as he was raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
