Big Brother: Kerry appears on Deal or No Deal in 2007
Stephen Mulhern has opened up on what Noel Edmonds advised him prior to taking over the reigns of Deal Or No Deal, which returns to screens on ITV on November 20.
Noel hosted the show on Channel 4 for eleven seasons until it was axed in August 2016, so it was natural that Stephen would turn to the telly legend for advice before starting the gig.
“I spoke to Noel Edmonds about it and he said to me the difference between obviously America and here was meant to be about the boxes,” he revealed exclusively to Express.co.uk.
The original American version famously features hostesses, including Megan Markle, with briefcases containing the possible winning amounts.
However, in the UK version, the amounts are in boxes which are opened by fellow contestants.

“I don’t think girls coming on holding briefcases of boxes is the right thing for the UK. I don’t think I’d feel very comfortable with it.
“I mean, I just think the beauty of the UK version – that’s why I did 3,000 episodes 10 years – is because it was all about what is in those boxes, and indeed, what people’s stories are,” Stephen said.
He was speaking at the statue of him, which currently resides in Butlin’s Minehead resort, where he started his career as a Redcoat, was unveiled last month.
“I didn’t believe it when Noel used to say, ‘The atmosphere in the studio is electric’ and I was like, ‘Oh, come on, please.’
“And also [I didn’t believe] the contestants can know each other over such a short period of time. I was totally wrong,” Stephen admits.

Fans will be pleased to hear that, aside from the new host and a new studio, the premise of the show remains the same. A contestant is confronted with 22 sealed boxes, each one hiding a different amount of money.
Without knowing what each one contains, they eliminate them one at a time, and the amount of money inside is revealed all the while fielding offers from the mysterious banker who will try to throw them off winning.
The Banker will pressure them to accept an offer of cash in exchange for what might be inside their box.
As long as the larger cash prizes remain unchosen, the Banker’s offers will get higher. But that can all change in an instant if a big cash prize is unveiled.
Deal or No Deal returns to ITV on November 20 at 4pm. Butlins will launch a Redcoats Academy in 2024. For more information visit jobs.butlins.com/entertainment.
