FOLLOWING the tragedy in Miami, President Joe Biden is headed to Florida.

On June 24, 2021, tragedy struck Miami when an apartment building collapsed, leaving over 150 unaccounted for.

When is Joe Biden traveling to Miami, Florida?

In wake of the tragedy occurring in Miami, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will be headed to Surfside Florida on Thursday July 1, 2021.

On his way to Wisconsin, Biden told reporters on Tuesday June 29 that he would like to get to Miami “Hopefully as early as Thursday.”

Following his comments Tuesday morning, the White House confirmed that the trip will be happening.

While in Miami, he will be spending time with the impacted families and with first responders.

“The response and support we have received from federal, state and other partners over the last six days has been unprecedented — this is the single largest non-hurricane emergency operation the state of Florida has ever seen,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said in a statement.

“We are deeply grateful for the support we’ve received from President Biden and the federal administration since day one, and thankful he will be visiting the site of this tragedy to spend time with the impacted families and first responders."

How many people have died in the collapsed apartment building?

Five days after the Champlain condo collapse, there have been 11 confirmed dead.

The deaths include:

  • Manuel "Manny" Lafont, 54.
  • Marcus Joseph Guara, 52.
  • Frank Kleiman, 55.

  • Leon Oliwkowicz, 80.
  • Luis Bermudez, 26.
  • Anna Ortiz, 46.
  • Christina Beatriz Elvir, 74.

Is the search for survivors dangerous?

Rescue crews have been working day and night to dig through the rubble and find people.

Rescue crews have come in from all over Florida to help in the search and rescue, including Tallahassee, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers, and Jacksonville.

Digging through the rubble is a challenging and dangerous task for rescue workers.

Removing pieces of rubble can affect other pieces that might have survivors underneath.

The rubble is also extremely heavy.

According to local search and rescue teams, one piece removed weighed 12,000 pounds.
