Brave bare-chested swimmer enjoys an icy dip in the sea off the Dorset coast as Britain prepares for another frosty night with temperatures set to plunge to -6C

  • Another cold night after last night’s -10.3C low in Scotland with -6C in Wales, -4C in Scotland and -1 in London
  • Tomorrow will be chilly but bright with blue skies for south and central parts of England before rain Thursday 
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland will be wet, windy and unsettled with risk of freezing fog across the UK  

Britain is preparing for another frosty night with temperatures set to plunge to -6C – but that didn’t stop brave bare-chested swimmers enjoying an icy dip in the sea off the Dorset coast today. 

High pressure is in charge of our weather as we go through the week, which will bring cold and wet conditions from Scotland and Northern Ireland. 

That will move southwards on Thursday bringing more unsettled weather to southern and central parts of England and Wales.

Tonight it’s going to be another cold night, much chillier than normal for the time of year, but not as cold as last night.  

Met Office forecaster Emily Smith said: ‘It will be -4 in Scotland, -6 in Wales and as low as -1 in London, with only coastal regions reaching above freezing overnight. 

‘However, there will be crisp sunshine and blue skies in south and central parts of England tomorrow and in the daytime on Thursday it will rain.  

‘There will be a sharp frost for much of the country. There will be a lot of fog across northern England, the Midlands and across the Welsh border.’

Bitterly cold air from Iceland plunged Scotland (pictured) into its coldest night of the winter so far yesterday – with a bone-chilling -10.3C (14F)

Next week maximum temperatures will be 9C, with London only getting up to 6C whilst Birmingham and Newcastle will see 5C. London would normally be 10C this time of year. 

She added that there will be an increasing risk of freezing fog patches so fog warnings will be in place. 

Rain, gales and strong winds will move south and during the day on Thursday it will feel close to freezing, at 2 to 3C degrees.  

Bitterly cold air from Iceland plunged Scotland into its coldest night of the winter so far yesterday – with a bone-chilling -10.3C (14F).

The record low so far this season was recorded on Saturday night into Sunday morning – the first day of December – at Tulloch Bridge, east of Fort William in the Highlands. 

Showers will become restricted to more coastal parts of east and south-east England this evening, whilst downpours will gradually merge into some longer spells of rain for northern Scotland. 

Elsewhere it will be dry with a frost and a few mist or fog patches.
