A train company has apologised after one of its signs at a railway station urged passengers to ‘jump’ even ‘when it feels scary’.

A commuter was horrified by the message on a Southeastern whiteboard at Canterbury East station in Kent on Thursday.

It said: ‘When it feels scary to jump, that is exactly when you jump, otherwise you end up staying in the same place your entire life.’

Stations often use whiteboards to display motivational and amusing messages to rail passengers.

But after seeing this one, social media user @illusionist4all tweeted the company to say: ‘Erm, is it just me or is this not slightly inappropriate to have at your station at Canterbury East? I just tried to raise it with one of your staff but didn’t seem bothered.

‘If someone is thinking about jumping I’m not sure this is a wise board.’

The firm swiftly said sorry. A tweeted reply said: ‘I would like to apologise about this. We have raised it with the station manager. We do work closely with the @samaritans when people are going through difficult times.’

Regulator the Office of Rail and Road said that 292 people died by suicide or suspected suicide on railway tracks nationally in 12 months in 2017 and 2018.
