The world’s highest sandcastle is unveiled in Germany after twenty artists sculpted 11,000 tonnes of sand in just ten days to make the 58 foot structure

  • The sandcastle resembling a fantasy city was made for the annual Sand Sculptures Festival in Binz, Germany
  • It measures 57.95 feet (17.66 metres) tall and beat the previous world record holder by 98 centimetres
  • Special easy-to-sculpt sand was imported from the Netherlands and compacted with water under pressure
  • The sculpture will be on display from now until November 3 as part of the Binz Sand Sculpture Exhibition

It resembles the fantasy cities of Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, with a dragon guarding its gates and turrets rising from its many tiers.

But the fairytale castle was constructed entirely of sand for the annual Sand Sculptures Festival in Binz, on the German island of Ruegen in the Baltic Sea.

The enormous structure has been awarded the Guinness World Record for highest sandcastle ever constructed, after a judge traveled from London and, along with a local surveyor, determined its height on Wednesday.

Standing 57.95 feet (17.66 metres) tall, the Binz sandcastle has an edge of just under a metre over the previous record holder – a 54.72-foot (16.68-metre) structure built in Duisburg, near Düsseldorf in western Germany, in 2017.

Organizer Thomas van Dungen was awarded a Guinness World Record certificate in recognition of his creation – which took ten days, twenty artists and 11,000 tonnes sand to build.

A special type of sand was imported from the Netherlands for its easy-to-sculpt properties, compacted with water under pressure and transported to the building site in huge trucks.

The sandcastle competition on the island has been held annually since 2010, but this year’s winning group had to wait several years for the world record.

In 2017, their sandcastle collapsed three days before completion, while In 2018, the group discovered that a protected species of bird had built a nest in the ruins of the previous year.

The artwork is open to the public and can be viewed as part of the Binz Sand Sculpture Exhibition until November 3rd. Tickets are €8.50 euros (£7.50) and €5.50 for children ($4.90).

The sand used for the structure was imported from the Netherlands because it was easier to sculpt and was compressed with water under heavy pressure

The record-breaking sandcastle is now open for viewing until 3 November, with the city of Binz expecting some 200,000 visitors
