A TEEN is accused of carrying a bag of 20 knives after police swooped on his car.

The haul included massive “zombie knives” made infamous in drill rap music videos.

Denique Newell, 18, and two other men were stopped on Thursday.

The trio allegedly tried to escape cops but were discovered nearby. Officers found a rucksack full of blades.

Newell, of Lewisham, was charged with the possession of 20 knives.

He appeared before Croydon magistrates yesterday and was remanded in custody until a hearing at Inner London crown court on April 8.

The Met Police said: “Officers conducting proactive patrols in Coldharbour Lane, South London, stopped a car containing three males. All made off on foot but were arrested nearby.

“A discarded bag was found, within which were 20 knives including zombie knives. Two males were released without further action.”

It comes as convictions for carrying a knife soared four per cent in a year to the highest level in a decade.

Last year, 14,219 offences for possession of an article with a blade or point were dealt with by the police and courts in England and Wales.

This figure is up from 13,632 in 2018, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Budget pledged £5million to the Youth Endowment Fund to help tackle violence.

Justice Minister Chris Philp said: “This Government is doing everything in its power to make our streets safer.”
