A POLICE officer has been killed in a shootout in the French city of Avignon during an anti-drug operation.

A massive hunt is underway for the shooter after the unnamed officer, who reportedly has children and is in his 30s, was killed.

France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that several police officers came under fire during the anti-drugs operation and one of them was hit.

“The seriously injured policeman died,” he said.

“Faced with this terrible tragedy, we think of his family, his relatives and his colleagues. The entire Interior Ministry is in mourning.”

The incident happened in on the ​Rue des Teinturiers around 7pm on Wednesday evening.
