Shocking moment man runs in front of a moving car in a suspected ‘cash-for-crash’ compensation scam

  • Couple driving through St Helens were shocked to see man run out into the road
  • Driver managed to brake in time and narrowly avoided hitting the pedestrian
  • Girlfriend, who filmed incident, says she believes the man was hoping to cash in

Extraordinary footage shows the moment a man ran in front of a moving car in what the driver believes was a bid for compensation.

The video was filmed by a passenger in a car driving through St Helens in Merseyside yesterday when the man ran from the pavement.

The driver managed to brake quickly and avoided hitting the man, but the two people inside the car believe he had sinister motives.

The passenger, who asked to remain anonymous, said: ‘My boyfriend was driving and I noticed the man from the point where the video started and he was just standing at the side of the road.

‘My boyfriend immediately slammed on the brakes and we managed to stop in time, luckily. At first, we were just in shock and glad to have not hit him.

‘But there are lots of stories on social media at the moment about people doing it for compensation, so then we began to think it was a suspected compensation claim. We’re both still shook up and feel quite nervous.

‘Looking back at the footage has made us feel quite angry, as he has not only put himself in danger, but us and other road users too.

‘I’m usually quite an anxious person anyway, but this has made me think what if this happens again.

‘We live in the local area of where the incident took place, so I’m pretty scared of driving to work tomorrow.’

Fortunately, the driver was quick on the brakes and stopped, barely clipping the man

There have been numerous reports of people attempting to get minor injuries in car accidents so they can claim an insurance payout.

Most of the so-called ‘cash for crash’ claim involved other drivers, who want to claim damages for whiplash.

But it has recently been suggested that pedestrians and cyclists may also be looking to cash in.
