Former Liberal Democrats leader Paddy Ashdown left a last request for £1,500 of his money to be spent on a party in his memory.

Probate records reveal that Lord Ashdown, who died aged 77 last December, left the bulk of his net estate of £370,573 in trust for his wife Jane and children Kate and Simon.

But his will drawn up 20 months before his death also requested that £1,500 should be ‘spent on a party to celebrate my passing’.

Lord Ashdown, who became Lib Dem leader in 1988 and led the party for 11 years – stated that the sum should be adjusted to take account of inflation.

He also showed his love for his wife of 56 years by asking, if she died before him, to be buried with her in their village of Norton-sub-Hamdon, Somerset.
