Families and small business owners have told of the misery the strikes are inflicting on their lives.

Jade McCrohon, 26, from Norfolk, says the Royal Mail action will be ‘the final nail in the coffin’ for her firm, With Love From Leo, which makes decorative art out of wire.

She said: ‘I have 100 orders that need to be posted. There are also huge delays in materials sent to me. It’s a shambles.

‘I am losing hundreds of pounds of profit because of these strikes and the cost-of-living crisis.

This is the closest I have come to shutting the business down because of the stress.’ Ellen Holmes, 62, from Croydon, said rail strikes could ‘destroy’ plans to honour her daughter Alison, who died this year, with visits to relatives in Maidstone, Kent. 

‘The strikers do not understand the heartbreak and distress they are causing,’ she added.

And Elle Carroll, 18, a support worker from Swindon, will have to pay an extra £80 for a coach ticket to see her family in Luton at Christmas. ‘It’s quite upsetting,’ she said.
