BANKSY may have created his latest artwork after a mural appeared of a girl crouching by a beach on a Pembrokeshire wall.

Locals in Whitesands, near St David's, Pembrokeshire, Wales, are hoping the new work is by the Bristol-based street artist although as yet there has been no confirmation.

The graffiti which shows a small child with arms wrapped around their knees has appeared on a hillside wall.

One man said: "It definitely looks similar to Banksy's other work. Certainly his style.

"It would be amazing if it was him but I guess we'll have to wait for him to confirm it."

Another woman said: "It would be very exciting if it was a Banksy but I cannot see why he would travel all this way."

But the mural has not been confirmed via Banksy's social media after appearing at the weekend – leading many to think it is fake.

Banksy has only ever done one known artwork in Wales when "Season's Greetings" appeared on a garage wall in Port Talbot, in 2018.

And other local people were not convinced the artist had reappeared over the Severn, with Martin Davies saying: "That is 100 per cent not a Banksy, more like a w**ksey."

Others likened it to buying a Banksy from "Poundland" and "Wish.com".

The stunning sandy beach at Whitesands is less than two miles from Britain's smallest city of St David's, Pembs.

It is renowned for being one of Wales best surfing beach and is also thought to be the site where St Patrick set sail in 432AD to convert Ireland to Christianity.

The area was also populated by cavemen with a submerged forest discovered off the coast as well as the remains of red deer and brown bears.

In March this year a work by the anonymous street artist fetched a record £16.7million at auction after it was sold to help NHS staff.

Who is Banksy?

The world-famous artist usually creates his street art under the cover of darkness.

While Banksy is said to have travelled the world to create his art he is thought to have produced most of his work in the UK.

More than 120 works have been attributed to him over three decades.

Arguably Banksy’s most iconic piece, it appeared on the South Bank, London, in around 2002.

The title is written behind a young girl seen reaching for a balloon in the shape of a heart.

Banksy's artwork titled Girl With Balloon – a variation on the original – was up for auction at Sotheby's in London when it self-destructed.

A secret shredder destroyed the painting after it sold for £1million.

The black-and-white artwork shows a young boy lifting a nurse, her arm stretched and wearing a cape, while traditional superheroes Batman and Spider-Man lie in a bin.

After fierce competition between bidders in a nail-biting sale at Christie's auction house in London, the painting sold for a hammer price of £14.4 million.

Added fees gave it a final price of £16.758 million – a world auction record for Banksy, according to Christie's.

Banksy's last confirmed artwork before that was an image of a woman sneezing out her dentures on the side of a semi-detached home in Bristol.

The artist confirmed the work on his Instagram, explaining it is named "Aachoo!!"
