How trading in your family home could give you a glorious retirement featuring views of iconic buildings such as Windsor Castle or Salisbury Cathedral

A room with a view has always been desirable whatever our age, and studies have even shown that homes with a picturesque outlook can make us feel healthier too.

Those seeking retirement properties often want scenic vistas, especially if they have lived for years without one.

Although Margaret Moore was looking to downsize from the family home she had occupied for 62 years, she knew she wanted to stay in her home city of Salisbury, Wiltshire.

And when she discovered Chapters, a new retirement village run by Platinum Skies, she was delighted to learn that she could afford a 50 per cent share of a one-bedroom apartment and soak up views of the city’s best-known landmark – the cathedral.

She said: ‘The view was the cherry on top. I have traded my old view of a main road to one of Salisbury Cathedral’

Other retirement villages offer views of landmarks such as Windsor Castle, pictured

‘The view was the cherry on top,’ says Margaret. ‘I have traded my old view of a main road to one of Salisbury Cathedral.

‘Having spent my life in Salisbury, the cathedral is naturally something I’m very proud of. And to be able to see it from my balcony is truly special. I love the grandeur of the architecture and the extraordinary spire. To be able to say that I have my own view of the cathedral, right from my home, is better than I could have imagined.

‘I can’t wait for summer to arrive at Chapters. As well as being able to sit out on my balcony at gaze at the cathedral, the communal gardens will really come alive.’

Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass balustrades make the most of the view from inside each home, says David Hines, chief operating officer of Platinum Skies. ‘Selected apartments feature circular windows, specifically designed to frame the view of the cathedral.

‘Living within proximity of a UK landmark is typically a luxury reserved for the wealthiest buyers, but our purchasing routes are allowing a wide range of retirees to access such impressive views. Through our part-buy, part-rent option, retirees can downsize to a highly desirable location, while unlocking equity in their home.’

Castle View in Windsor is another retirement development with views to boost the soul. The Sky Deck at Castle View looks out to Windsor Castle. ‘A lovely view provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect, wonder and gain perspective,’ says Castle View boss Robin Hughes.

Meanwhile, the Four5Two development in North London has lift access, high ceilings and, crucially, fantastic views on the upper levels, stretching across the capital’s suburbs to the famous Wembley Stadium arch in the distance.

If it really is the great outdoors you are looking for, buying a lodge at a holiday park might be an option.

Parkdean Resorts has sites in some of Britain’s most picturesque parts, such as Looe Bay in Cornwall and Carmarthen Bay in Wales.
