ANDREW Neil is one of the country's most well-respected interviewers, and he was chosen to grill the two remaining Tory leadership candidates.

But who is the journalist, and how old is he? Here's everything you need to know.

Who is Andrew Neil?

Andrew Ferguson Neil is a Scottish journalist and broadcaster.

As of 2019, Neil presents live political programmes This Week on BBC One and Politics Live on BBC Two.

Neil was appointed editor of The Sunday Times by Rupert Murdoch, and served in this position from 1983 to 1994, after which he wrote for the Daily Mail.

In 1988 he became founding chairman of Sky TV.

He is the current chairman of Press Holdings Media Group, whose titles include The Spectator, and the ITP Media Group.

Neil is widely regarded as the best political interviewer on television.

How old is he?

He was born in Paisley, Scotland, on May 21, 1949.

That makes him 70 years old.

He grew up in the Glenburn area and after school went to the University of Glasgow.

When did he interview Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt?

Jeremy Hunt and Boris Johnson went head to head again, this time on BBC on July 12, 2019.

Following their heated appearance on ITV earlier in the same month, Hunt and Johnson once again spoke about how they plan to tackle the major issues facing Britain in 2019.

What did Boris Johnson say?

Johnson said that crime in London fell by 20 per cent during the time he was mayor of the capital.

He repeated his claim that the issue of the Irish border backstop could be sorted out after Brexit had happened, saying it should be "deleted" from the current Withdrawal Agreement and discussions on the issue should be part of any trade agreement.

What did Jeremy Hunt say?

Hunt said a Brexit deal can be agreed by the end of September.

He added he would focus on changes to the Irish backstop and prevent a "hard Irish border".

Hunt claimed that an extra 1.5 percentage points in economic growth, pushing the country to three per cent, would give the government £20billion more to spend.

What were Andrew Neil's best interviews?

In October, Neil interviewed Alistair Campbell on BBC's This Week.

Campbell claimed the government could not ignore the thousands of people who had marched for a second Brexit referendum, but Neil was quick to point out that his government ignored the thousands who marched against the Iraq war.

When Debbie Abrahams was under Neil's spotlight on Daily Politics in January 2018, she didn't fare well either.

When asked "why the lynch-mob for Toby Young, but not for Jared O'Mara?" (two men who had been under investigation for their language used towards women online) she faltered.

In May Ben Shapiro, a US-based pundit, apologised to Neil after being "destroyed" in a BBC interview.
