This is the bizarre moment a pair of plucky chickens teamed up to fend off a killer cat after it pounced on them.

The mobile phone footage of the feathered duo was recorded in St Petersburg, Russia.

The unlikely team were able to defend one another from the predator as they pecked and flapped until it scarpered.

In the clip, recorded on February 25, a black-and-white cat can be seen in a stand-off with one of the farmyard fowl.

The feline swooshes its tail and slowly raises its paw before it suddenly pounces on the chicken.

The chicken is pushed to the ground with its wings flapping but is saved by its companion who comes striding over to distract the cat.

The bewildered predator lets go of its prey before deciding to turn its attention to the chicken that had intervened in its hunt.

It then pounces on its new victim but the original target flaps and pecks at the feline as it attempts to return the favour.

Eventually the cat realises it has met its match and decides to scarper.

Cats do not usually kill adult chickens and instead foxes are considered their number one predator.

More widely, coyotes, raccoons, dogs, mink, owls, and even some hawks also consider chickens an easy-to-catch meal.
