TWO children are fighting for life while three adults have been rushed to hospital after a horror crash on the M8.

A six-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy are in a critical condition after the "serious" incident at around 9.50am on Sunday in West Lothian, Scotland.

They were travelling in a brown Ford Focus with a man and woman on the M8 at junction 4, near Whitburn, before colliding with a black Volkswagen Golf on Scotland's busiest road, police said.

The two adults were seriously injured and rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

The youngsters were taken to the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People.

The female driver of the Volkswagen Golf was taken to University Hospital Wishaw with serious injuries.

Emergency services, including Scottish Fire and Rescue, attended the scene.

The incident saw mass delays on the busy motorway before the road was reopened at 2.35pm.

Motorists were forced to rejoin traffic at Junction 5 as Scots headed out on Sunday morning.

Police Scotland have launched a probe into the horror smash and have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Sergeant Jennifer Forbes said: "We're asking for anyone who witnessed the collision or has any potential dashcam footage of the cars involved to please come forward.

"If you believe you can assist our investigation, please call 101, quoting incident 1158 of 17 October."
