That’s plane crazy! Gatwick passengers are sent into a panic after prankster constructs ‘Welcome to Luton’ message on flight path

  • YouTuber Max Fosh pranked airline passengers who were flying in to Gatwick
  • He displayed a 60 metre ‘Welcome to Luton’ sign on grass not far from landing
  • The letters cost Mr Fosh £4,000 and he can leave the sign in place for six weeks

The quiet town of Luton no doubt has its own unique charms.

But plane passengers could be forgiven for being less than thrilled when they spotted a ‘Welcome to Luton’ sign upon landing – not least because the 60-metre greeting has been installed on the approach to Gatwick in West Sussex, a mere 60 miles south of Luton airport.

Passengers described being in a ‘state of panic’ when they spotted it. YouTube prankster Max Fosh has claimed he was behind it and has apologised if ‘anyone has been seriously thrown’.

‘If you’re flying into Gatwick look out your left window and you should see it about 90 seconds before landing,’ he said.

The letters cost Mr Fosh £4,000. He has permission to leave the sign in place for six weeks.

Abbey Desmond, from Great Dunmow, Essex, shared the ‘great prank’ on Twitter and has received more than 25,000 likes.

Seeing the funny side of the sign she explained she wanted to ‘give everyone else a laugh and it has blown up with everyone blaming RAF Luton’.

RAF Luton is a parody social media account which shares information about the ‘the world’s most mysterious and secret (and fictitious) military base’.

Mr Fosh initially looked for fields next to both Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport.

‘A lovely couple said, ‘yeah we’ve got a 80metre long patch of land we don’t have any use for,’ so I said ‘great can I get my tarpaulin out and start hammering pegs into the ground?’,’ he explained.

He placed 14 letters, each 8metres by 3metres, to spell out ‘Welcome to Luton’ on the land near Gatwick.

Together the large letters cost him £4,000 as they have been ‘made to last’.

Mr Fosh has permission to leave the sign in place for six weeks, so passengers landing at Gatwick Airport can see it out their left window for a while longer.

‘It’s my job to make videos and my videos are all about doing silly things, to put a smile on people’s faces but just to be silly, I’m glad this stunt has gone down well,’ he said on the Justin Dealey show on BBC Three Counties Radio.
