FRIGHT path! Flybe plane rocks in high winds as it lands at Leeds Bradford Airport – as forecasters hint UK faces -5C and snow with ‘Storm Ciara’ on way

  • Terrifying footage shows the aircraft struggling to make a smooth landing at the airport in West Yorkshire
  • It sways from side to side as it nears the tarmac and only manages to touch down at a wonky angle
  • Comes as forecasters warn that Storm Ciara could hit this weekend and gales of 80mph this evening
  • Wind chill in the north of England tonight will ensure that cool regions actually feel closer to freezing

This is the terrifying moment a FlyBe plane was rocked by high winds as it landed at Leeds Bradford Airport as forecasters hint that the UK faces -5C temperatures and snow as Storm Ciara is on the way.

The aircraft struggled to make a smooth landing before finally touching down at an angle on the tarmac in West Yorkshire this afternoon.

The Met Office has warned commuters in the north of England that they face an onslaught of showers and gusts as they head home from work this evening, with gusts of up to 80mph in western Scotland.

And a wind chill will ensure that northern regions with recorded temperatures of 48F (9C) will feel closer to freezing.

Met Office forecaster Simon Partridge said: ‘Gusts of 70-80mph in north-west Scotland and 60mph in the rest of Scotland are expected on Monday night. Wintry showers will definitely definitely be seen on Monday and Tuesday on Scotland’s hills.

‘Widespread frost and -3C to -5C widely will be seen on Tuesday night, in a cloudier and quieter midweek. But much of the UK will have another wet and windy spell by the weekend, with a storm coming from the coast of North America.

‘Whether we name the storm depends on how the system develops. But warnings could be issued for any part of the UK. There’s certainly more windy weather on the cards as it looks rather unsettled through February, with the wettest and windiest weather in the North and West, and a short-lived few colder interludes.’

Determined dog walkers in Tynemouth braved the blustery conditions on Longsands beach today as Britain is battered by ales and prepares for the potential arrival of Storm Ciara at the weekend

Though the south will remain largely calm over the next couple of days, the west of Scotland will tomorrow night be battered by wind.

Frost and fog will sweep Britain on Wednesday and heading into Thursday before conditions ease off in most of the country for Friday.

But Storm Ciara could be named this weekend, with the Met Office faring that amber warnings will be in force with gusts of around 80mph.

The south and west of Scotland will suffer the greatest gales, with 38ft waves predicted off the coast and even more gusts predicted throughout next week.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: ‘February is more famous for snow than storms – but computer models show an Atlantic barrage is on the way this month.

‘Stormy conditions are possible at the start and end of the week, and again in the following week, with no sign of widespread snow.’
