Airbn-TREE: Family of four spend £500 to stay night in children’s tree house after proud father who built it advertised it for rent online as a joke

  • Ollie and Kady Hammond booked 8ft (2.4m) by 6ft (1.8m) playhouse for a ‘break’
  • Couple and their children Beau, five, and Brooke, ten, stayed on Saturday night
  • Jason Kneen, 49, had listed the structure on Airbnb as a joke for £500 per night

A family of four paid £500 to spend the night in a children’s playhouse after the father who built it advertised it on Airbnb as a joke.

Ollie and Kady Hammond booked the tiny 8ft (2.4m) by 6ft (1.8m) accommodation for a ‘mini break’ with their children Beau, five, and Brooke, ten.

The family decided to stay overnight in the garden playhouse on Saturday after it was posted on Airbnb by father-of-five Jason Kneen, 49.

Mr Kneen, who built the structure during lockdown, had advertised it on the popular travel website – but didn’t actually think anyone would pay money to stay.

The accommodation is modelled on a Lottie Doll Treehouse, one of his children’s favourite toys, and cost around £3,500 to complete.

It boasts a balcony, slide, ladder, trapdoor and internet access, while toilet facilities are located in a nearby replica Tardis, from Doctor Who.

Mr Kneen, from Ludgershall in Wiltshire, said the money Mr and Mrs Hammond paid for the booking will be donated to charity.

He added: ‘They had a great time – they said it was better than any hotel they’d ever stayed at.

‘The kids went in the paddling pool and had pizza – they loved it.

‘It was the first time they’d used Airbnb and just went on looking for something fun to do.

‘They were nearby anyway at the weekend so just went for it. They had a nice holiday.’

He added: ‘I only put it up for fun – we listed it as a space for a laugh.

‘We put that price on there [£500] and thought nobody would be interested.’

App developer Mr Kneen said the playhouse is open-plan and a ‘small space’ – but added the guests were able to use other facilities.

Mr Kneen, pictured, said Saturday’s break will be the playhouse’s final booking

He said ahead of the stay: ‘I do hope it’s nice weather. We have a pool setup, so they will have access to that.

‘There’s little bunk beds inside. It’s all open; it’s just a small space. The toilet – the Tardis – has been there for years.

‘[The playhouse] probably took a couple of weeks of elapsed time to build, but a week in total.

‘We got a local guy who does stuff for us in. We just asked him to price it up and do it.’

The father-of-five said Saturday’s break will be the playhouse’s final booking.
