An elderly woman had to be rescued by police after getting stuck in the bath for eight days.

The unnamed woman in her 70s had been at her home in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

The alarm was raised by workers at Wiltshire Farm Foods who said that she was a regular customer but had not placed her usual order.

Len Bateman, who was her delivery driver, said: ‘She’s a regular customer that orders through us every week and when she didn’t contact us on her regular day, we knew something was wrong.’

Mr Bateman decided to call in at the elderly woman’s house and noticed that the curtains were shut and the post had built up in the letterbox.

He then phoned the police.

‘I might not have acted so quickly if I knew she had friends or family and when she didn’t answer the door I knew I needed to get help,’ he added speaking to the BBC.

Leicestershire Police arrived on the scene and used force to gain entry into the property.

They later tweeted that the woman was found in good health ‘although hungry’.

East Midlands Ambulance Service were also called and carried out an assessment of the woman before she was then taken to hospital.

‘Officers attended the address and after forcing entry found the resident, the woman in her late seventies, in the bath unable to get out.

‘It is believed she has been there up to eight days.

‘Officers assisted the woman out of the bath and colleagues from East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) attended the address to take the woman to hospital for further assessment.’

A spokeswoman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: ‘We received a call at 2.01pm on November 20 from our colleagues in Leicestershire Police requesting medical assistance at a private address in Loughborough.
