DRUG dealers are stealing NHS uniforms so they can sneak out of lockdown pretending to be key workers.

Cops warned of thefts from nurses, with it thought dealers can use this disguise when they are stopped.

North Wales Police's Eastern Community Safety Team said: "Shop workers/ key workers beware – scumbag drug dealers are stealing uniforms so that when they are stopped by police they identify as a key worker.

“Take care with your uniforms and report anything suspicious on 101. Thank you for your brilliant work."

The force has warned about a number of Covid-19 fraudsters working in the area and told people to ignore any callers to their doors.

They added: "In this Covid age, no one should be calling at your address unannounced.

"Door to door sales are not allowed. People knocking on your door offering to do your drive, not allowed.

"No one is allowed to canvass door to door. Just don't answer the door."

Today we told how a pharmacist and a surveyor were arrested for selling "bogus" coronavirus tests as £20,000 was seized in cash.

The National Crime Agency said it had arrested the two men on suspicion of illegally selling tests for the virus.

Graeme Biggar, boss of the National Economic Crime Centre, said he expects to see an increase in scams amid the Covid-19 outbreak and warned the UK to be on its guard.

A 46-year-old pharmacist from South London, was arrested under the Fraud Act on Saturday after he allegedly made false and misleading claims about the tests.

The use of coronavirus tests at home is not currently advised by Public Health England.

There are no tests for home use that are CE marked, a certification that shows compliance with European safety standards, and it is illegal to sell them.

It comes as coronavirus deaths in the UK have jumped to 12,868 today after 761 more people lost their lives – including a healthy 20-year-old.

The young victim was one of 20 patients killed by the deadly disease in hospital who had no underlying health conditions.

The Department of Health confirmed the latest death toll for the UK is now at 12,868 – but the figures only include those who have died in hospital and not care home victims.

If deaths outside of hospital were factored in, the true death toll could be as much as 50 per cent higher – bringing the total close to 20,000, new figures suggest.

Among the latest deaths is a Border Force guard working at Heathrow Airport, who died from the disease last week after falling ill at work.

TV's Dr Hilary Jones also paid tribute to a paediatrician today who had saved the lives of his two children.

Dr Judith Darmady OBE, 84, is understood to have died from coronavirus – with at least 40 NHS workers falling victim to the bug.

Positive coronavirus cases today rose to 98,476 – up from 93,873 yesterday as Britain continues its fourth week of lockdown.
