A DEMONIC mum who called the cops after drowning her two-year-old daughter in a bathtub in California has horrified family members who thought she was a ‘loving’ mother.

Marcie Montelongo, 35, called the Gilroy Police Department on Sunday morning to say she had drowned her toddler, Mackenzie.

The police found the lifeless toddler in the bathtub and Montelongo about a mile from the home.

Montelongo told authorities again she had killed her daughter and she was arrested on suspicion of murder and held without bail.

Her 77-year-old aunt Dolores Montelongo said: “All I know is that she was a great mother.”

Dolores Montelongo said Marcie and Mackenzie visited her a few weeks ago in New Mexico where aunts, uncles and cousins gathered for a family reunion.

She said: “She seemed happy, the baby seemed happy.

“It was just the two of them.”

Dolores said neither her nor the family knew why Montelongo would hurt her child.

Montelongo had been investigated by San Benito County’s children and family services last September for possible neglect but Dolores claims her niece had not mentioned the investigation.

Dolores said she was in shock and did not think the death was intentional.

All I know is that she was a great mother.

Neighbours in Montelongo’s apartment complex said the family had moved in two months ago.

Leon and Julie Clinton said they never suspected anything out of the ordinary from Montelongo, who they said usually kept to herself.

At times, they would hear the child playing behind closed doors.

Leon Clinton said: “Obviously we were shook, we are shook, it's demonic.”

Neighbour Jane Tovar said: “This is the nicest community that I have lived in personally when you live in a nice gated community you think that can't happen here.”

Montelongo is due in court today.
