Cops are hunting for a would-be thief who sent a mother and son tumbling down a flight of stairs during an attempted robbery in a Manhattan subway station — that left the woman with serious head injuries.

The NYPD released a video of the suspect wanted in the Saturday morning incident.

“WANTED for ATTEMPTED ROBBERY: On 7/17 at 9:40 AM, inside the Canal St ‘N’ subway station in Manhattan, the suspect tried to forcibly remove a bag, causing two victims to fall down the stairs, leaving one victim in critical condition,” the NYPD said in a tweet with a short video clip. “Any info? DM @NYPDTips or call 800-577-TIPS.”

The clips show a man — wearing a gray T-shirt, black pants and a white bandana around his neck — exit the turnstile at the subway station on Saturday.

The man is accused of trying to snatch the 32-year-old son’s backpack from behind as he and his mother walked up the stairs at the Q line station around 10:45 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The force sent the son flying backward and reaching for his mother — and both of them fell down the stairs. The woman was knocked out and suffered a large cut on the back of her head, as well as bruising to the brain, police sources said. She underwent brain surgery Saturday night at Bellevue Hospital.

“I saw the guy holding the lady’s hand and he was screaming for help,” witness Carlos Lopez, a coffee stand vendor, told The Post, in reference to the woman’s son. “There was a lot of blood coming out of her head.

“Her son was screaming for help and I went over there to see what was happening. I got the officers.”
