What has happened in The Long Call season one?
A body is found on a beach in North Devon. A man with the tattoo of an albatross around his neck; he’s been stabbed to death.
DI Matthew Venn and his team, Detective Jen Rafferty and DC Ross Edwards, search for a way into a case that has no witnesses, no forensics and no motive.
Matthew is also dealing with the recent death of his father and the complications of being thrust back into a community he was forced to leave.
As he tries to make a new home with his husband, his mother, a strict member of the Christian Brethren community, refuses to put the past behind them after years of estrangement.
The Detectives must establish how a man with very few connections to the area ended up brutally killed.
Matthew finds himself thrust back into the religious Brethren community that rejected him, whilst attempting to confront an unresolved past that he, in truth, has never been able to let go of.
Matthew and the team continue to hunt for clues about the victim; they uncover secrets from the past and theorise who might have motive to murder.
Connections are made between the victim and the Brethren community when it’s uncovered that the victim had started attending meetings.
New suspects and questions arise; how did Lucy Craddle know the victim? What was the truth of housemate Gaby’s relationship with him?
The pressure of the case intensifies and finally, the team are afforded some vital break-throughs. Closer to home, Matthew and his mother look to build bridges after years of silence.
The prospect of rebuilding a relationship with his mother blurs Matthew’s ability to objectively examine the Brethren community.
He wrestles with the personal and professional to solve the case before anyone else gets hurt. Matthew pushes to help the Brethren women find their voice.
Lucy and Gaby can no longer stay quiet as an important silence breaks – With the revelations that follow, no one is safe.
Matthew and his mother’s relationship hits crisis point and shocking truths uncover the extent of the lies suffocating the community.
However, one question remains, if all are capable of deceit, who is capable of murder?
