The 16th and final episode of The Walking Dead will bring the current season to an earth-shattering conclusion this Sunday, October 4.

After experiencing severe delays in the wake of the continuing coronavirus pandemic, A Certain Doom’s release was put on hold as post-production on the episode was left incomplete.

A release date for this season’s epic finale was finally confirmed, and TWD fans are eager to see Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus), Hilltop and Oceanside go to war against the Whisperers.

To give viewers a taste of the action, a new clip has revealed the first minute of the show’s return.

The footage showcased the group of survivors preparing to launch the first stage of their counterattack against Beta (Ryan Hurst) and the approaching horde of undead walkers.

Episode ten will open as Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) confirms a change in their initial plan to lure the army away from Oceanside.

He then scours the room looking for volunteers, and Oceanside survivor Beatrice (Briana Venskus) bravely steps up.

Daryl agrees with the impending charge, but warns the team that not everyone will make it out alive.

When his foreboding promise was revealed as one of the first lines of the next episode, fans quickly launched into speculation as to which characters will meet their end in the finale.

Despite Beatrice’s confidence, Daryl’s warning may have sealed the fate of the Oceanside survivors who volunteer to accompany him in his perilous mission.

Following the latest episodes, The Walking Dead’s mainline series will conclude with one more season eyeing a 2021 release date.

However, the post-apocalyptic world will continue with a number of spin-offs, including a follow-up series centred on Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride).

Therefore, the reception and viewing figures of this highly anticipated season finale could make or break the future of the iconic zombie series.

Moreover, the announcements of the show’s continuation have also inadvertently spoiled some of the previously unknown events of the season finale.

Now fans know Daryl will survive to hop over to his own series, his safety in the war against the Whisperers has been guaranteed despite the high stakes of the season finale.

As Beatrice is one of the only named characters confirmed to be joining Daryl on the frontlines, viewers may have to endure watching her become overwhelmed by the approaching herd.

This would make her tenure on the series disappointingly shortlived as, despite being introduced in season seven, A Certain Doom will mark only her 11th appearance in the series.

On the other hand, it simply wouldn’t be a TWD season finale without the cruel death of one of the fanbase’s up-and-coming favourites.

No release date has been set for season 11, but it is hoped production can be completed soon and fans can discover more about the mysterious Commonwealth next year.

The Walking Dead, A Certain Doom, will air this Sunday, October 4 on AMC and the following Monday on Fox.
