ITV viewers were left heartbroken during Monday night’s episode of The Chase when contestant Paul Green – also known as Pete Travis – appeared as a contestant on the show. The medieval trader introduced himself to host Bradley Walsh alongside his fellow contestants. However, tributes starting flooding in as Norfolk locals recognised him and revealed he recently passed away.

The 72-year-old appeared on the quiz show alongside fellow contestants Tom, Estelle and Jessica.
But when the episode started many viewers immediately took to Twitter to pay their respects to the “well-loved” Norfolk councillor who died in a house fire this summer.
Chaser Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha tweeted: “Saddened to hear that Pete from today’s Chase has since passed away in horrible circumstances.
“A true gentleman, a warm, engaging and thoroughly entertaining opponent.”

Ben Green, Mr Green’s son, tweeted the chaser: “Dad was so excited about the episode. He talked about it daily up to the filming and then every week after.
“He had an amazing time and described the crew as the most wonderful warm people and yourself & Bradley as amazing characters he would have liked to have had a beer with!”
Chaser Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis, replied: “Such a great contestant and nice man. Very sad to hear he has passed away.”
Mr Green’s death was said to have “rocked” the local community in the south Norfolk town of Wymondham.

Audrey Doyle, who knew him, explained: “Pete was the town crier and lived about 500m from my house.
“It was a great shock to the local community. He had a great send-off with a horse-drawn procession through the town centre, with his family and Steam Punk friends following.”
Lolly R Dobrijevic said: “That’s very sad. Sorry to hear this and what a shame he did not get to see himself on TV. RIP”
Annette James, Wymondham town councillor, said: “Pete was a much-loved character in our town. I was proud to call him my friend and serve alongside him as a town councillor. Thank you for this Paul, he loved his day out on The Chase.”

Nicola Ashmore added: “I knew Pete very well, we are all saddened about what happened. It definitely rocked our community!! May he R.I.P, and I’m pretty sure he will be doing all the quizzes up there, he was very excited about being on the chase!”
Nicky O’Grady was another friend of Mr Travis who took to social media to pay tribute to him.

He said: “He was a character as we could all tell today you saw that too.

“I was lucky enough to know him and he loved his time on The Chase and was so excited for his day out. I was lucky to be the florist to help give him the proper steampunk send-off he deserved.”
Dozens more of Mr Green’s loved ones wrote touching comments about his passing on The Sinnerman’s Twitter.

Mr Green sadly died following a blaze at his home in Wymondham on June 27.
He served as Wymondham’s town crier and became a history-making town councillor when he was elected to the town council in 2019 representing a political party of his own founding.
His family issued a heartfelt tribute in the Eastern Daily Press following his death saying: “You touched so many lives and leave us all with the fondest memories, which will carry us through the tough times ahead.
“A much-loved character across Wymondham, re-enactment and steampunk communities to name but a few. Father of four, grandfather to eight, and companion to Kiki the Jack Russell. You will be sorely missed.”
