The Blacklist has a dedicated fanbase which were left reeling by the season six finale, here’s what happened in the last episode called Robert Diaz.

What happened in The Blacklist season 6 finale?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Blacklist season 6

The main thread of The Blacklist season six finale saw an assassination plot against the president unravel.

In the end, it transpired the Commander-in-Chief had set the whole thing up himself.

The supposed plot was to cover up the president’s schemes to bump off the First Lady, who had damning information against her husband that threatened to derail his re-election campaign.

President Diaz (Benito Martinez) was exposed and his crimes sent him down.

WILL THERE BE ANOTHER SERIES OF THE BLACKLIST?

Although he was caught out, the whole thing will have a ripple effect.

However, the big shocks came as Raymond “Red” Reddington (played by James Spader) encountered Katarina Rostova (Laila Robins).

As fans will remember, Katarina was revealed to be Liz’s (Megan Boone) mother, who was previously thought to be be dead.

Red was obviously shocked to see Katarina very much alive but things didn’t end well for him.

Katarina stabbed Red before abducting him in a van which promptly drove off.

THE BLACKLIST SEASON 7 RELEASE DATE, CAST, TRAILER, PLOT

Season six left things on a cliffhanger but it won’t be long before fans find out what happens next after the show got a recommission.

The seventh run is expected to be hitting screens this autumn with the cliff-hanger from the finale resolved.

Speaking about the season six finale, showrunner John Eisendrath told Variety: “He’s not dead, I don’t think we should pretend that James Spader is no longer going to be on The Blacklist.

“He’s alive, but despite that, the end opens up an incredible number of possibilities. What is going through Katarina’s mind? How was Red so easily deceived?

“What did he think was going to happen when he showed up unguarded and met this woman on a dark street in Paris?

DID DEMBE LEAVE THE BLACKLIST?

“How does a man who does nothing without taking incredible precautions leave himself open and vulnerable to being captured or attacked by a woman who he allegedly has known his own life — was her lover, had a child? Those are all great questions.”

Teasing what fans can expect from season seven, Blacklist creator Jon Bokenkamp said: “Because it is a serialized show with a clear endgame that we’ve talked about, there have always been moments where we know in the life of the series that we need to hit.

“Sometimes it’s about moving those up and sometimes moving them back. In the whole mythology of the show there are even sort of tentpole moments that we know we need to hit in each season.”

Both stars also said that while the President Diaz storyline was over for now, there could be more come in the pipeline possibly in the future.

On keeping the show fresh, Eisendrath said: “Part of what’s exciting about writing a TV show, and this show in particular in keeping it fresh going into year seven, is that it has to surprise us before it can surprise the audience.

“We do allow ourselves to be surprised. We come into the season and we never know exactly what the story is going to be — we didn’t know Red was going to be in prison and have to argue in his own defense when we started the last season — so part of the process is a little bit walking on the high-wire so that we can be surprised, and only then will the audience be surprised.”

The Blacklist season 6 will start on Sky One on June 5 at 9pm
